What began as an engagement party turned into something much more unforgettable — a secret wedding set against the dramatic coastline of Wellington’s South Coast. With only a few people in the loop and a plan to keep their guests completely unaware, the day unfolded with genuine shock, laughter, and moments of real intimacy.

We had the privilege of helping Marc find his suit for the occasion — something timeless, tailored, and ready to travel from Sydney to New Zealand. Below, he shares what it was like pulling off the big surprise, exchanging private vows by the ocean, and carrying a suit across the Tasman without a single wrinkle.

What inspired you to turn your engagement party into a surprise wedding in New Zealand?

We didn't want a traditional wedding, instead wanted to do something a bit more informal and fun. We also loved the idea of our friends being surprised to make the day even more memorable.

How did you find the process of choosing your suit for the big day?

I have purchased a suit in the past from Rembrandt in Wellington and was very happy with the experience and quality. So, it was a no brainer to go to Rembrandt for a suit for the big day. The staff were very helpful and arranged to be tailored so it was ready for the big day.

What was it like travelling from Sydney with a suit? Any tips for keeping it looking sharp on the move?

I carried it in the suit bag provided from Rembrandt and took it as part of my carry on to make sure it didn't get lost on the journey which was still looking good and ready for the big day.

What was your favourite part of the day — the secret lead-up, the ceremony reveal, or something else entirely?

Our first look at Princess Bay on the South Coast was definitely a highlight. The day was also very special having all of our friends and family together which very rarely happens - Some of Katie's family (who were in on the secret) made a trip all the way from the UK.

Who had the best reaction when the surprise was revealed?

Kate was off getting ready, but I was lucky enough to be in the room to witness the reveal. Some of our friends who had no idea were completely shocked.

Do you have any advice for other couples considering a surprise wedding or destination celebration?

Be prepared to lie to the people you love... It's not easy, but was worth it in the end.

And finally — how did it feel exchanging vows privately on the coast before the big reveal?

It was perfect, with both of us loving the ocean we felt lucky that the weather allowed us to do this. It was nice having our own time before the madness, and sharing our personal vows that we didn't share with everyone else.
